Extension care tips from a New Jersey bridal hair and makeup team

When it comes to bridal hair, the goal is always the same: soft, full, long-lasting glam that photographs beautifully from every angle. Whether you’re going for romantic waves or a sleek, timeless updo, clip-in or halo extensions are often the secret behind that extra volume and polish.

But here’s the thing — even the best-quality extensions need a little love before the big day. As a New Jersey bridal beauty team specializing in makeup and hair, we always recommend washing and prepping your extensions before your preview or wedding morning. Here’s exactly how to do it.

1. Wash With a Clear, Gentle Shampoo

Before using your extensions for the first time, always give them a wash to remove any factory residue. Choose a clear or sulfate-free shampoo — nothing too heavy, creamy, or oil-based. You want the hair clean, but still able to hold a curl and volume.

Pro Tip: Skip two-in-one or moisturizing shampoos. These can coat the hair and make styling more difficult.

2. Condition the Ends Only

Unlike your natural hair, extensions don’t produce oil — so they don’t need conditioner at the top. Apply a small amount of conditioner only to the mid-lengths and ends, where the hair is more prone to dryness and tangling.

Pro Tip: Avoid leave-in products unless your stylist specifically recommends one. Too much moisture makes extensions slippery and harder to secure.

3. Air Dry Flat

Once washed, lay your extensions flat on a towel or hang them on a clip hanger to air dry. Blow-drying isn't necessary and can damage the hair if done too often. Letting them air dry helps preserve their natural texture and longevity.

Pro Tip: Never brush wet extensions. Always wait until they’re 100% dry before detangling.

4. Gently Brush With the Right Tool

Use a loop brush or wide-tooth comb and always start at the ends, gently working your way up to avoid pulling or shedding. Take your time! The better you care for your extensions now, the better they’ll blend later.

Pro Tip: Store your extensions in a silk or satin pouch to prevent tangling and dust buildup.
